» Feature Writer Rosemary Drisdelle - Cairo's pyramids

I visited Giza in March of 2005 - the biggest surprise for me was how close the pyramids are to Cairo. They are almost in the city. I will say that no picture does them justice - and yes, every tourist destination in Egypt is a warren of vendors trying to sell you everything from necklaces to themselves as a subject for your next picture. It got quite tiresome after a while, but as long as you stayed in the spirit of the culture, it was okay. At one point, surrounded by aggressive vendors in the Halili (?) market, I simply grabbed my husband by the hand and said "Run!" We did. (And I suppose that husband is the reason I escaped the marriage proposals - there was only one that I can recall.)
Anyway, it was the experience of a lifetime.

You are right, and that is what I tried to convey in my article. Disappointing at first until you get to the other side of them, and only then can you appreciate their size. You are also right about the aggressive vendors!

I was at Giza only 3 weeks ago ... and I have to say the situation with the hawkers is better than it was when I last visited in 1993.

Tip: If you photograph a mounted policeman, he's not allowed to accept 'baksheesh' ... but is allowed to take it on behalf of the horse!

I'm carrying on this discussion topic because I believe many people visit the last remaining Wonders of the Ancient World. Who can go to Egypt and not visit the Pyramids at Giza?
So, anyone who has anything to say about their visit to the Pyramids, please let us know? Anyone seen the lights show?
