Africa Week Celebrations in London

Africa Day on 28 May, a culmination of Africa Week festivities in London, will be celebrated with a free festival in Trafalgar Square starring Miriam Makeba.

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingston, will be holding a week of major events in London to celebrate Africa Day. On 28 May Miriam Makeba will be the star at a free concert in Trafalgar Square.

Originally established in 1958 as African Freedom Day, Africa Day falls on 25 May each year. The Africa Day concert in Trafalgar Square on the 28th will be the highlight of the week’s festivities. The programme includes:

Wednesday 23 May: A morning press conference to launch Africa XI (a football team for the continent comprising of 11 of Africa’s greatest footballers) and an evening reception to launch Voice of Africa, the UK’s first African-led radio station to be given a London-wide FM license.

Thursday 24 May: The Mayor will be hosting an Africa Day Reception at City Hall for London’s African communities.

Friday 25 May: The African Union UK Heads of Mission Group will have their annual Africa Day gathering and reception.

Saturday 26 May: City hall will be hosting London Business School’s annual Africa Day conference, which will focus on enterprise and business leadership.

Sunday 27 May: London’s African churches will join together in a morning of prayer for Africa and her people on the continent and in the Diaspora.

Monday 28 May: Africa Day on Trafalgar Square, a one-day FREE festival celebrating Africa and promoting the positive contributions of London’s African communities, with an expected audience of 35,000 people. Mamma Africa, Miriam Makeba will be the Star of this first free Africa Day concert.

The Mayor also supports Make Poverty History, a coalition of over 200 charities, campaigns, trade unions, faith groups and celebrities. Make Poverty History is the UK arm of the Global Call for Action Against Poverty, a network of organizations representing over 150 million people from 60 different countries. Show your support for the campaign by wearing the white band, available online or at one of the 750 Oxfam shops across the country.
